Mastin Moor Allotment And Garden Group
Horticulture/Eco Therapy and Peer Support Group
Situated at Mastin Moor Allotment and Community Garden,
Staveley,
Chesterfield.
The group meets Wed and Thurs midday till 5.30pm.
(the Community Gardens site is open to the public and can be visited at any time)
We offer peer support for people experiencing mental health issues. Help tend The Root And Branch allotment plot and adjacent Community Garden. Work in beautiful and peaceful surroundings doing as much or as little as you like for as long as you like. Share experiences and ways of managing your condition whilst improving general well-being and learning to grow your own vegetables. You are welcome to take home veg as well as enjoying the outdoor cooking done on-site at harvest times.
We now have a 20ft shipping container (rather makeshift at the moment as it is still to be insulated and boarded out ) but volunteers do need to provide appropriate clothing – tea, coffee and biscuits are provided plus we often make soup on site. We meet Wednesday and Thursdays (weather permitting – we will sometimes change the day to suit the weather) midday till 5.30pm with a phone/text round at 11.00am to confirm we will be ‘open’. Once they know what they are doing volunteers are welcome to visit when they want to ‘work’ on their own or just sit and enjoy the space.
There is also a work group of Community Garden Volunteers who meet once a month 5.30pm till 8.00pm to manage the upkeep of the garden – Root And Branch volunteers are also welcome.
Drugs and Addictions:- we accept people recovering from drug and alcohol problems as well as those with a ‘dual’ diagnosis.
Health and safety, insurance, volunteer policy :- At present we are an informal group of volunteers and as such I have been advised that public liability insurance is not necessary. It is a safe environment and with reasonable care the activities are not dangerous. Anyone displaying dangerous, threatening or abusive behaviours will be asked to leave.
