The Health And Well-being Area In More Detail
In order to support people and enable volunteers/'staff' from across Derbyshire we will have a range of accommodation/low impact dwellings –these may be cob buildings, log cabins plus tepee's or yurts for the summer. The range of therapeutic activities will depend partly on the skills of individuals that get involved; it will certainly involve woodland management, woodcrafts, creating walks and wildlife habitats, allotments/gardening, outdoor cooking, a range of arts and hopefully a cafe/shop/gallery. It will be centred on peer support for long term anxiety/depression and related mental health issues as well as a 'step-down' from the crisis area. Hopefully it will grow to include courses and volunteering opportunities from groups in the wider community – they may be 'NEETS', drug/alcohol groups, business/ corporate teambuilding or volunteer groups, elderly, alzheimers sufferers etc.
We realised that in order to make the 'crisis' area workable in practice there would need to be nearby support to provide food, water, washing facilities and extra volunteers/staff close to hand when needed. As we researched 'green gyms' 'wilderness therapy' etc, we realised that not only could this offer support for a wider range of mental health issues whilst also supporting 'crisis' day to day, there is also a very real opportunity for it to provide a great deal of the necessary long term funding even making the project totally self funding!
